Abstract:
    
Systemic strength sports practicing lead to a number of health benefits for women. The increase of bone and muscle mass is a prophylaxis of osteoporosis, degenerative joint changes and arthrosis of which women suffer to a great extent. The aim of this work was to determine the intake of nutritional supplements of women who practice fitness, powerlifting and weightlifting. A total of 32 women were tested. Of them 9 (at mean age 26.1 years) practiced powerlifting, 10 (at mean age 19.4 years) practiced weightlifting, and 13 (at mean age 24.5 years) practiced unprofessionally fitness-bodybuilding for more than 2 years. They answered a questionnaire of 28 questions about the weekly use of basic food products, supplements and questions about the age, sporting experience, number of training sessions, stature and weight. Nine women took additional protein supplements (mainly whey protein). The average amount of additional protein per week was 141.1 grams and ranges from 90 to 300 grams. For them a higher relative intake of proteins was observed (2.24±0.49 g/kg). None of the tested women who took protein supplements took amino acid supplements. Eight of the women took additionally amino acids as supplements. Almost all women who took supplements took multivitamins. Ten women did not use dietary supplements. For them, the relative intake of proteins taken from food was 1.86±0.67 g/kg, which was within the recommended doses for this type of exercise load (1.6 to 2.0 g/kg). The women were grouped according to the intake of dietary supplements and were analyzed according to their sporting practice, training activity and some anthropometric indicators. There were no statistically significant differences between the groups.
In conclusion, the relative intake of proteins in women practicing strength sports could be maintained within optimal limits without protein supplements, when sufficient amounts of protein rich foods are taken. Probably the number and amount of food supplements that are taken depends mainly on financial factors. In this sense, on the background of a well-completed diet, it is more appropriate to use more amino acid instead of protein supplements.
